Gender and social relations within and between different groups of people are critical to people’s wellbeing and to the processes by which people’s well-being changes. They are both critical determinants of people’s ability to influence, participate in and benefit from social, economic, and material change, as well as intrinsic to people’s sense of identity.

This program gender, poverty and social development is enriching from both an analytical and a practical perspective. It investigates current thinking and concerns relating to the practice of social development, poverty reduction and the promotion of gender equality and women’s empowerment and describes tools and frameworks to inform policy making and practice.

Among the biggest challenges facing the global community today are the eradication of poverty and inequality, and the needs of social development. This course introduces participants to the concept of poverty reduction, the culture of poverty, the causes of poverty and its effects. Intersections between poverty and health, human rights and education will be explored in a variety of international contexts. Policies designed to reduce poverty will be analyzed at both the global or international level and from community perspectives. The course also introduces social development, with emphasis on understanding and planning for socially sensitive development. Global attention to social development, such as the World Bank's plan and the World Summit on social development will be explored.

  • The workshop also aims to assist participants to develop their practical skills in addressing gender and social development in analysis and in policy design and implementation.
  • Objectives and learning outcomes

By the end of this workshop, participants should be able to:

  • understand the importance of gender and social inequality, and particularly gender relations, in development and poverty reduction processes, and different ways in which these have been addressed in development policy and practice
  • Understand current techniques of rehabilitation and managing Physically Challenged
  • understand and apply critical concepts and theories regarding gender relations and change
  • be able to critique development policies from social development and gender relations perspectives
  • be able to use specific tools for gender analysis in the design, implementation and evaluation of development policies and projects, and to interpret the outcomes
  • understand and critically evaluate the main gender and social inequality challenges in specific development situations, policies and interventions.
  • Provide a critical examination of definitions and theories of poverty, poverty reduction, and social development
  • Foster an awareness of ethical, social, and cultural issues within a global context and their importance in the exercise of professional skills and responsibilities

Course Methodology

  • Through an innovative mixture of trainer input and participant interaction, everyone is
  • encouraged to participate in an experiential learning environment. The learning is enjoyable, memorable and easy to implement, with a strong focus on practical application and open discussion.
  • The training methodology combines lectures, discussions, group exercises and illustrations.
  • Participants will gain both theoretical and practical knowledge of the topics. The emphasis is on the practical application of the topics and as a result participant will go back to the workplace with both the ability and the confidence to apply the techniques learned to their duties.


ACCOMMODATION: This Conference is non-residential. Participants are to lodge in hotels of their choice near the conference centre. A list of these Hotels will be provided on request.
